Open Houses are back on!

Open Houses are back on – both for the public and for brokers! In case you didn’t know, a Public Open House in Greenwich, usually held on Saturday or Sunday afternoons, is not the only opportunity for a house to be available for viewings. A Broker Open House in Greenwich takes place on either Tuesday or Thursday depending on the location. Meant for agents to preview homes on the market, it’s a great time to see what’s available, compare features & amenities, and get a pulse on pricing. With about a three and a half month hiatus, open house signs suddenly seem to be everywhere. I’ve been thinking, if we’re all doing open houses at the same time to feature our listings, who will be left to come preview the homes?

The Early Daze…

Confusion and Uncertainty – I’m very aware of the exact date, my birthday thank you very much, when schools were closed and the world came to a grinding halt. I held one of the last public open houses that Sunday, March 15th at one of my listings. My clients wanted their home shown and sold, of course. However, they were keenly aware of the growing concerns of having strangers traipsing through their house. I asked attendees to wait in line outside so only parties of two or three at a time took a tour of the home after donning booties and vowing not to touch anything. I led each small group through the house using Lysol wipes to open doors and cupboards. Everyone was already extremely cooperative and seemed relieved that precautions were taken to respect everyone’s safety. It was early on and masks were not part of the equation yet.

The house sold in 15 days but, with so much uncertainty, it felt like the transaction took months to complete. Every day brought changes in practices. Adapting to the challenges was interesting and often frustrating but more on that later…
